  • If you're ever in Nigeria, please make a trip down to Badagry (via @tvpadventures), a coastal town just outside Lagos that was the 'Point of No Return' for slaves during the Trans Atlantic slave trade in the 1800s.

You'll get to see how for as little as one umbrella, a bottle of alcohol, glass and weapons, African leaders sold droves of their own people into slavery. So no, the whites did not just show up and start carrying people away. It was our own leaders that very willingly facilitated it. And they were so pleased with the gains they got that even when slave trade was abolished, they fought back so hard to keep it going. I found it so puzzling to see how in spite of all this, these facilitator chiefs are still held in high regard and honored by their people to this day.

But then, I thought about how every four years we still elect the same selfish individuals that steal, ridicule, persecute, kill, promote hate speech, fuel tribal propaganda and cripple our economies with ridiculous borrowing from the West that come with draconian terms. And I realized that centuries later, nothing has changed. We are our own undoing. Still our own enemy. Same oppression. Different packaging. And yet we still play to their tunes like possessed people.

So we can celebrate #blackhistorymonth every February for as long as we want, but until we're ready to look closer home and acknowledge that it starts with you wanting better for yourself and refusing to take bullshit lying down, it'll just be another month come and gone. Another hashtag we'll just be using for social visibility, and 'for the culture'. πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈπŸšΆπŸΎβ€β™€οΈβœŒπŸΎ
